Facts
Hair loss is a naturally occurring event with most people losing up 100 hairs every week!
A healthy scalp contains up to 100,000 hairs on the head at any given time, each growing from an active follicle.
The average life of a hair on the head is 7 years, after which time the hair is shed by a new one taking its place.
Losing Hair
When the number of hairs being shed exceeds the number re-growing and the scalp is showing through the hair, we may be entering early stages of baldness.
This occurs when the enzyme, 5-Alpha reductase, found in the cells surrounding the hair follicle combines with the hormone testosterone and creates dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is the catalyst for the hair to shed prematurely and to set up a cycle that prevents or minimises future hair growth.
What causes DHT?
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is formed when there is a hormonal “upset” of the system, mostly occurring in men but it can also affect women. It is caused as a result of one of more of the following conditions and examples :
CAUSE | Example |
Genetic predisposition | (Family History) |
Stress | (Constriction of blood supply) |
Drugs | (Chemotherapy) |
Diet/Nutrition | (High consumption of animal fats) |
Health | (Hormonal issues) |
Environment | (Pollutants and toxins, UV Rays) |
What can be done about it?
There is no “magic potion” or “fix” however returning and keeping the scalp in as normal a state as possible may allow hair to grow naturally. Success may be seen in 80% of cases.
Hair Growth Drugs
Drugs such as Regaine (Minoxidil) work on promoting blood supply and circulation around the follicle but the effect only lasts as long as the user is using the formulation.
The Answer
The best way to combat hair growth is to allow your own system to operate at maximum capacity and produce its needs naturally. Clearly if the root cause is genetic, there is little that can be done apart from delaying the inevitable. Most hairdressing products are cosmetic and leave a residue on the hair making it “feel” conditioned and healthy. We have found that the most efficient method of dealing with hair loss is to initially address the cause, (eg stress), remove the DHT then supply moisture and deliver nutrients to the cells.
Our resident Trichologists recommend Bosley to combat this problem, with variants available for natural or colour treated hair and early or advanced stages of hair loss.
Bosley Shampoo cleans the hair and removes the DHT from the scalp and follicles.
Bosley Hair and scalp conditioners detangle and smooth the hair whilst supplying a cooling and soothing moisturiser that penetrates into the scalp.
The final stage of the Bosley regime is the treatment, which is left on the scalp and does not weigh the hair down, delivering nutrients to the follicle to assists in the formation of new hair until the follicle recovers and the natural blood supply is restored.
